Distracted Teen and Angry father work their way to success with the Power of Open Communication and Coaching in parenting

Updated: Jul 24

During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, a concerned father reached out, sharing numerous challenges regarding his daughter. He described her as unfocused, constantly distracted, and struggling with social skills. His list of concerns was long, but when I spoke with the daughter, a different picture emerged. She revealed that her biggest challenge was her father’s micromanagement and quick temper, which had significantly impacted her mental well-being.

Faced with a dual challenge, I chose a balanced approach. I provided feedback to the father, though he was initially resistant to it, and focused on empowering the daughter. Through a series of coaching sessions, we worked on setting and achieving goals, which helped her gain confidence, reduce anxiety, and identify the changes she needed to make for her personal development.

The coaching process was transformative for the daughter. She began to create and surpass goals, which boosted her self-esteem and allowed her to manage her anxiety better. These positive changes equipped her with the resilience and confidence needed to handle life's challenges. As a result, she successfully transitioned to an undergraduate college in Delhi, where she now thrives with zeal and enthusiasm.

This story underscores the importance of open communication and the willingness to receive feedback, not only for students but also for parents. When parents are open to feedback, they can create a supportive and nurturing environment that fosters their child’s growth and development. In this case, although the father was initially resistant, the daughter's progress demonstrated the profound impact of a supportive and understanding approach.

The power of coaching and conversation in overcoming challenges cannot be overstated. For the daughter, having a non-judgmental space to talk about her issues was crucial. It allowed her to express her feelings, set realistic goals, and work towards achieving them. Coaching provided her with the tools and strategies needed to navigate her personal challenges and build a stronger, more confident self.

In conclusion, this impact story highlights the critical role of open communication, both from parents and children. It also emphasises the importance of coaching in helping young individuals overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential. By being open to feedback and fostering healthy conversations, parents can significantly enhance their relationship with their children and support their journey toward becoming well-rounded and confident individuals. This is the true power of talking—creating a space where growth, understanding, and transformation can flourish.
